From start-up to Network Rail Principal Contractor
My role: founder and Managing Director.
- Business
- Rail and civils contractor: P-Way, civils and labour
- Role
- Founder and Managing Director
- Starting point
- Start-up subcontractor
- Result
- Network Rail Principal Contractor status
Challenge
Growing an owner-run subcontractor into a business Network Rail would appoint directly. That meant management systems, accreditation and a team that could carry the work without every decision going through the owner.
What I did
Put in the structure, management systems and accreditation needed for Principal Contractor status; built the team and the labour model; and led work-winning, pricing and delivery, from early subcontract packages to direct appointments.
Outcome
Network Rail Principal Contractor status and twelve years leading the business. It is the route STH now helps other owners take, from direct experience rather than theory.
Steve’s own experience as founder and Managing Director. The business is not named here. STH Construction & Engineering is a separate company and does not hold that business’s accreditations.
